Data.203 – Old Bowman, Giant Star Fall

I had been thinking about it the whole time.

During the turf war where I first fought against Buckler, the reason that I had been able to win was because of the golems, who were my advance guard, and my returned allies.

That…was correct!

It was the unmistakable truth!

And so I was worried about fighting Buckler without the unique systems of the turf war in place.

He was without a doubt the more experienced player, and he was good at fighting people like me.

There was no point in fighting him while too far away for him to counterattack, if my attacks weren’t even effective.

Back then, my attacks had worked because Buckler took off his armor.

But that was only due to the turf war battlefield being a certain way, and he didn’t usually take it off.

And so I felt that I would be forced to fight in a way that was more disadvantageous this time.

But that in itself was a mistake.

Right now…I had more reliable companions than during the turf war!

The golems and the people who returned were reliable, but not as much as Necoco and the others.

And even if we hadn’t adventured together for that long, I knew Necoco, Satami, and Anne.

No, I didn’t know about their private lives, but I knew their stance towards games, their favorite style, and personality.

And so I had more trust in them.

So why had I thought I had less of an advantage when I was fighting alongside them

I was in a much better state than during the turf war!

And so I would not lose to Buckler!

However, it was also true that I had been pushed to the brink and struggled.

And the reason for this…was clear!

“You really are…no! Buckler, you’re strong! Much stronger than before!”

“I could say the same for you! KyujI! You’ve defeated me again!”

“But who knows…about the next time!”

There was a second of weightlessness after we rose into the sky.

And then we plunged back towards the ground like stardust.

◆ ◆ ◆

‘The battle has ended!! As all of the Straight Knights have been defeated, the winning party is…the Ghost Guild! Congratulations on making it to the semi-finals!’

After defeating Buckler with Stardust Arrow, Charin made the announcement.

I had said what I wanted to Buckler.

And so he would likely not talk to me when I returned to the waiting area.

Fighters did not need many words.

But maybe he would still offer some congratulatory words if we won.

That’s right… We were getting close to winning!

But why did I feel a little scared

It was supposed to be a good thing, but even I was starting to get anxious about it.

The closer you get to the prize money and glory, the more blurry it gets.

And the feeling of just wanting to win becomes clear.

I didn’t want to end this fight as a loser.

Perhaps that was all it was.

“That being said, the money is also…”

While blurry, it was still a lot of money.

And as an older person, it almost didn’t feel real.

The idea that you could win in a game and receive money.

In fact, I did feel that it was an appropriate amount for the people who got through these vicious battles…but it was still hard to imagine it coming to me.

Even with so many advancements in technology, money was still important.

It was something you needed in order to live happily.

I couldn’t be like those selfish protagonists from comics and saw that winning was enough, and that I didn’t need the money.

If I can take it…I’ll take it!

That is what adults do…!

I thought of such things after the fight.

But perhaps I was still nervous.

‘Now, the surviving players will warp back to the waiting area!’

Said Charin, and I was sent back.

When I returned, I felt as if the welcoming applause was louder than last time.

While it couldn’t be helped due to the composition of our party, I felt bad to be the one who attracted the praise every time.

I was only able to win because of the others.

However, no one wanted to hear that, and I doubted that Necoco and Satomi even cared about such things.

They were stoic gamers.

“Very impressive, Mr.

Kyuji.

And you did brilliantly as well, Anne.

That was quite a surprise victory.”

Said Satomi as he appeared.

He wasn’t bothered about dying, and was calmly thinking back on the fight.

From here, we would be fighting even stronger enemies.

And so it would be impossible to have a perfect fight where no one died.

There was no point in being bothered by such small details.

Hell, maybe I would be killed in the beginning and have to watch the whole fight…

No, I couldn’t let that happen!

Besides, there were only two fights left!

I would never get over it if I died immediately in the semi-final and final…

Of course, I wouldn’t blame my friends if it happened to them, but I would feel terrible enough to press my head into the ground and beg for forgiveness if I died that quickly…!

Don’t try and stop me…I need to do this until I’m satisfied…!

I’m doing this because I want to…!

Well, there was no point in simulating defeat.

I needed to start thinking about the next fight.

Once the next four battles were finished, it would be the first of the semi-finals.

And then it would be our turn.

“Satomi.

Can you bring up the archived videos of our next opponent”

“Ah, but due to the tournament composition, it’s the winner of the next fight who will be our opponent.”

“Is that right… That’s different, as all our other opponents were already decided.

I suppose I will have to pay extra attention while watching this one.”

“I doubt it will be a long fight, so try not to miss anything.”

Necoco said suddenly.

She had been quiet up until now.

At first, I had worried that she was feeling disheartened, but I was apparently wrong.

There was a different reason for her quietness.

Because the leader of one of the parties in the next battle was Macoco Strange, from AUOratorio!

Necoco’s beloved aunt…!
